Welcome to the Office of the Director!

          Guido Schmuck
    IES Director (Acting)

The mission of the Office of the Director is to support the scientific management and communication issues of the Institute. Together with the Task Force Environment and Health, the Office forms the Directorate of the IES.

Following Prof. Dr Leen Hordijk’s retirement from his position as Director in August 2011, Guido Schmuck took up the position of Acting Director of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability on the 1st September 2011. In this capacity he ensures that the IES delivers excellent science which perfectly meets the needs of the European policy-maker, whilst maintaining a stimulating working environment.

The Director's Secretariat supports the Director in all his tasks: Managing his agenda, assisting in the logistical preparations for visitors to the Institute and in the organisation of meetings and workshops.

The Head of the Office of the Director acts as Strategy and Scientific Programme Manager of the IES, coordinates the development of the Institute’s strategy and scientific programmes in support to JRC corporate activities and oversees the development and execution of the annual research work programme from a content perspective. She is the IES contact person for the Partnership for European Environmental Research (PEER), and also coordinates the Institute’s internal and external evaluation exercises. As Head of the Office, She coordinates the day-to-day running of the Directorate and supports the Director in strategic and scientific environmental issues.

The IES Communication team deals with all aspects concerning Corporate and Institute events, media relations, publications and information material, websites and internal communication.

The Communication and Stakeholder Relations Manager coordinates all IES external communication activities and oversees the Institute's interactions with the media. He is the contact point for all IES research, in particular for the Policy Directorate-Generals of the European Commission, and takes administrative role in welcoming visitors to the Institute.

The Institute Information, Communication and Public Relations Assistants check the quality of scientific deliverables, maintain and update the IES website and support the participation of the IES in JRC-wide events. They are involved in all communication with the public, promote the image of the Institute by preparing PR material, such as reports, leaflets, brochures, fact sheets and actively participate in Open Days and visits to the Ispra site.

The Director has an advisor for environment and health issues who acts as a JRC contact point for issues related to current research in this field and the associated debates which raise public concern. For example, links between climate change and health are increasingly being identified with the debate as to what proactive steps can be taken to combat the impacts of extreme events.
