Welcome to the Forest Resources and Climate Unit!

Guido Schmuck
Unit Head

The Unit seeks to develop a framework for the assessment of policy options for maintaining and improving sustainable, global, forest management practices, and enhancing forest health and vitality.

The Unit’s activities will contribute to the assessment of the status of EU and global forest resources and investigate the roles that forests play in supporting economic and ecological services, in the face of natural and anthropogenic threats. The EU’s Forestry Strategy, other forest-related policies and Multilateral Environmental Agreements will act as cornerstones and drivers for the specific actions, at regional, EU and global scales.

Policy-relevant information on status and trends, derived from advanced remote sensing, forest models, multi-sectorial sources comprising ground networks, and partnerships with international bodies, will be consolidated in information systems and integrated with spatial modelling tools. This modelling framework, shared with key partners under an approach fostering collaboration, will permit simulation of outcomes for potential forest management practices and the analysis of policy options for sustainable forest management

The work of the Unit is carried out in two Research Actions:

Action 22003 - FOREST (Forest Data and Information Systems) activities on forest monitoring are essential to the implementation of indicators related to the monitoring of forest spatial patterns and forest fragmentation, as these are of key importance for the EU policy to halt the loss of biodiversity by 2010.

Action 42003 - TREES-3 (Global Forest Resource Monitoring) provides quantitative measurements and mapping of changes in forest resources for the EU policies related to global environmental and forestry issues, with a focus on Eurasian boreal forests and tropical forests, including the Caribbean and Pacific regions.
