The Institute for Environment and Sustainability of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) is located in Ispra, a small town on the eastern shore of Lake Maggiore (Lombardy, Northern Italy). Ispra has approximately 5,000 inhabitants. A detailed city map and street guide is available here.
The closest town, which also gives its name to the province, is Varese (21 km from Ispra), and the nearest main city (and also regional capital of Lombardy) is Milan (about 60 km south-east). The Swiss border is just 30 km away.

The mission of the JRC is to provide customer-driven scientific and technical support for the conception, development, implementation and monitoring of EU policies. As a service of the European Commission, the JRC functions as a reference centre of science and technology for the Union. Close to the policy-making process, it serves the common interest of the Member States, while being independent of special interests, whether private or national.
