The Core Staff of the Institute for Environment and Sustainability is made up of over 200 administrative and scientific agents. In addition to the core staff, the IES has an active policy of hosting grantholders, contractual agents, visiting scientists, seconded national experts and trainees. Core staff and visiting staff add up to over 400 IES staff in total.

Situation as at January 2013
The credits available to the IES are subdivided into staff expenses, operating costs (maintenance of buildings and equipment, electricity, insurance, consumables, etc.) and specific credits (direct scientific procurements). The credits come from the institutional budget, which is allocated to the JRC from the European Commission budget through the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7).
An additional part of IES income derives from participation in FP6 and FP7 competitive activities, performing work for Commission services and carrying out contract work for third parties such as regional authorities or industry. These activities must be in line with the tasks outlined in the JRC's own work programme and are seen as an essential tool for acquiring and transferring expertise and know-how.
