IES signs Collaboration Agreement with IASS

On 30 October, on the occasion of the Global Soil Week in Berlin, IES Director Maria Betti and the Director of the Potsdam Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS), Klaus Töpfer, signed a 5-year Collaboration Agreement that aims to foster cooperation of the two institutes in the field of sustainable soil management.

The main objectives of the Collaboration Agreement are to:

  • Collaborate in the field of soil governance, sustainable soil management, the reduction of soil degradation, and the management of soils in relation to the challenges of climate change.
  • Deepen the understanding of the scientific, economic and social issues relating to soil management.
  • Support the Global Soil Partnership.

Through the Collaboration Agreement, the two institutes will identify soil-related challenges for investigation and develop innovative cost-effective approaches to improve sustainable soil management. Together, they will work on common objectives, datasets, modelling tools, public initiatives and target audiences/policy frameworks related to soil. They will jointly promote the development of the European Regional Soil Partnership, and contribute to the ‘Sustainable Development Goals’ and a ‘Soil Protocol’.
