On the 6th - 8th July 2009, the Joint Research Centre Ispra will host the Authors-Reviewers Meeting of the TEEB - D0 Report, jointly organized by the JRC Institute for Environment and Sustainability and the University of Liverpool.
In 2008, the Phase I Report on "The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity", prepared under the patronage of the European Commission and the German Minister for Environment, highlighted the economic size and welfare impact of biodiversity losses and stressed on the concept of ecosystem services.
On these bases, a Phase II initiative has been launched, including the preparation of a set of reports (from D0 to D4) intended to identify elements to be used for the preparation of new policies and international discussions after 2010, when the current "Action Plan for halting the loss of biodiversity" will reach its end.
The JRC workshop will bring together contributors to the D0 report (Valuation Framework, Methodology and Cost Analyses) with other biodiversity and ecology experts. The purpose of this volume of the final Report of TEEB is to complete and deliver the relevant science and economics foundation for all the end-user interfaces D1 to D4. The objective of these end-user interfaces is to take the economics into the mainstream, and make them relevant and useful, respectively, to policy-makers, administrators, businesses and consumers.
The "D0" approach synthesizes ecological and economic foundation, necessary to understand the economics of ecosystems and biodiversity.
In view of the forthcoming publication of the report, the workshop will focus on the following objectives:
1. Addressing comments gathered from the Internal and External Reviewers
(Chapters 1-4 and 6)
2. Face to face meeting with the Reviewers
3. Avoiding duplication and inconsistencies across chapters
4. Synthesising key messages and recommendations for every chapter
5. Working on Chapters 5 and 7-9
6. Creating a Glossary of Terms
