The 33rd International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE) will take place between the 4th and the 8th May 2009 in Stresa, Italy. Jointly organized by the Joint Research Centre, the Norsk Romsenter Norwegian Space Centre, the International Center for Remote Sensing of Environment, the International Symposia on Remote Sensing of Environment, the Bay Area Environmental Research Institute, the Science Applications International Corporation, the European Space Agency/ESRIN and EUMETSAT, the Symposium will focus on Earth Observation systems and airborne techniques for understanding and managing the Earth environment and natural resources, in the perspective of a global sustainable development.
ISRSE-33 will specifically address the UN Millennium Development Goals and be structured along the societal benefit areas of the GEO (Group on Earth Observations) initiative, showing how poverty reduction, food security and agricultural production, integrated water resource management, natural resource management and climate change are all inextricably linked, in both developed and developing Countries.
The programme will include plenary and thematic sessions, poster sessions and side events addressed to scientists, policy makers and resource managers in the public and private sectors, as well as students.
International keynote speakers will provide with a complete and multi-sector overview on the current situation and present the latest developments in international agreements for setting up interoperable Earth Observation and Spatial Data Infrastructures.
During the Conference, European efforts (EC, ESA and Member States) towards establishing the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) initiative - conceived on the Lake Maggiore ten years ago - will be discussed, and tribute will be paid at the US National Land Imaging Program and its Landsat Data Continuity Mission providing with broad availability of satellite data as well as NASA past and current achievements in earth observation.
The Symposium will also offer a platform for describing and discussing new remote sensing programs in all Countries of the world, and dedicated sessions on applications in Africa.
