Michael Lutz
Michael, from Darmstadt in Germany, is the technical contact point for INSPIRE data specifications
Michael holds a MSc degree in landscape ecology and a PhD in geoinformatics from the University of Münster, Germany. Between 2002 and 2008, he worked as a doctoral researcher in the Münster Semantic Interoperability Lab (MUSIL) and as a post-doctoral researcher at JRC on the semantic modelling of geospatial data and processes to support the discovery, composition and access of geographic information and geoprocessing services in SDIs. Since 2008, Michael has been supporting the INSPIRE data specification activity at JRC.
As the technical contact point for data modelling, Michael is supporting the work of the 19 Thematic Working Groups on the INSPIRE data specifications. As part of this work, he is:
- giving support on conceptual modelling issues (e.g. code lists)
- maintaining the shared INSPIRE UML repository and other tools and systems supporting the INSPIRE data specification activity
- supporting the harmonisation of UML data models from different thematic domains
- liaising with the other technical INSPIRE activities (metadata, network services) on cross-cutting architectural issues, such as registers and registries.
The work on INSPIRE involves diverse research challenges, such as:
- the role of harmonised data models in SDI architecture
- registers as central SDI components
- modelling and usage of code lists and vocabularies in harmonised data models
- organisational best practices for large-scale data modelling exercises
Michael also works on bringing in and following up novel approaches used in INSPIRE into standardisation bodies such as OGC and ISO TC211.
