What we do
Policies addressed
The Unit supports the following policies/initiatives playing an active leading role at European and International level (all these European policies and International intergovernmental initiatives are relevant for the creation and sharing of environmental information):
- Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE)
- Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES)
- The Intergovernmental Group on Earth Observations (GEO)
- Shared Environmental Information System (SEIS)
Work programme
The Unit covers all phases of the Policy Cycle of these initiatives and promote their coherent development. This work is currently carried out by two Institutional Actions:
- Action SHAPE (SHAring Policies for Environment)
- Action ENABLE (Environmental information systems implementation and Evolution)
- Action CID(Community Image Data portal)
Other Current Activities
Administrative Arrangements:
The unit provides direct support to the European Commission in specific areas such as SEIS-BASIS, SEIS-CAFÉ, SEIS-EMF, INSPIRE Forum and INSPIRE Implementation, through Administrative Agreements.
Competitive Activities:
Some of the research activities of the Unit are carried out in collaboration with other partners and research institutions within the framework of FP7 projects. The following projects are currently running: GIGA, GENESIS, PLUREL, AEGOS, EuroGEOSS.
